In psychology, of the individual the concept of “mask” refers to the use of an outwardly projected behavior or image to influence how others perceive us. This mask represents a kind of constructed persona that a person adopts to gain admiration, respect, or to elicit a particular kind of reaction in others. The individual wearing this mask seeks to control the social context both passively, through attracting attention and admiration, and actively, through the enhanced use of communication and creating a sense of awe.

Perfection and attention to detail are crucial in this process. The individual must avoid mistakes in order to maintain the illusion of the mask and to astonish appropriately in the context in which he or she finds himself or herself. Sometimes, the exaggeration or accentuation of certain features may be deliberate, as it suits the specific cultural or social context. Finally, this behavior aims not only to distinguish oneself from others who may wear similar masks, but also to gain the respect of those who recognize and appreciate the use of such masks.

In this psychology course, we use the Venice Carnival as a vivid example to explore the concept of “mask” in everyday life and social interactions. The Carnival, with its elaborate masks and historical costumes, offers a powerful metaphor for understanding how individuals adopt various metaphorical “masks” to navigate and influence the social world.

Key Points of the Course:

  1. The Mask as a Means of Expression and Control:

    • We’ll explain how, just like participants in the Carnival, people in everyday life use metaphorical masks to project desired images of themselves. This can be done to elicit admiration, respect, or to influence others.
  2. Expectations and Perceptions:

    • We’ll analyze the expectations of the audience (the tourists at the Carnival) and how these expectations influence the person wearing the mask. The importance of perfection, admiration, and respect are central in this context.
  3. Importance of Consistency and Authenticity:

    • We’ll discuss the importance of maintaining consistency in context and how a mask must be worn with dignity and a strong personality. Examples from the Carnival, like the man in the gondola with a black cloak and a beak-shaped mask, illustrate the importance of gestures and behavior in adopting a role.
  4. Social Dynamics and Non-Verbal Communication:

    • We’ll delve into how masks influence non-verbal communication and social dynamics, examining how people in costume at the Carnival express authority, mystery, or other qualities through their attire and behavior.
  5. Reflections on One’s Own “Mask”:

    • The course will encourage participants to reflect on their own “masks” in daily life: how we construct them, when and why we wear them, and how these influence our interactions with others.

Course Objective:

The course aims to provide a deeper understanding of how our outer presentation (our “masks”) affects our social interactions, others’ perception of us, and our self-perception. Through exploring the Venice Carnival, an event where the mask and costume are celebrated, participants will be able to explore these concepts in a rich and fascinating historical and cultural context, linking them to modern life and their own personal experiences.

Methodology: The course will combine theoretical lessons with practical activities, group discussions, simulations, and case study analysis. Particular attention will be given to interaction and personalized feedback to ensure in-depth and customized learning.

Materials and Resources: Each participant will receive educational materials, including manuals, presentation slides, and access to online resources for further study.
